Welcome to Week 5 of the Cloud Nine Quilt blog, including step-by-step instructions for creating the Key Lime Pie quilt block!

Well, what a week! We are selling our house and completed our Open House weekend. Amazingly, we received two sales offers, and even more exciting, we accepted one!  What a fabulous start to the New Year, and I am so happy we de-cluttered our home, including my sewing room.

The Key Lime Pie Quilt Block

This week we are making the Key Lime Pie block, if you are making these Cloud Nine Quilt blocks along with me then please upload photos of them to my Instagram board – @poppypatchworkprojects. I’d love to see your quilt block creations! 💕

This block has Identical Split Squares in it, these are Quarter Square Triangles but constructed slightly differently so they don’t end up being mirrored versions.

Check out my video for the measurements, but see below for a step-by-step guide for making these Identical Split Squares. I think it’s a game-changing technique that is not actually that tricky. 😍

The measurements and instructions for making this block will be available in my YouTube video, to be released later today, 04 February 2024.

The Key Lime Pie block will be positioned in the finished quilt as shown.

Come back next week, we are over halfway now with this quilt top!

How to Make Identical Split Squares for the “Key Lime Pie” Block

Begin with two squares of fabric.
Draw 4 lines on the wrong side of one of the squares (red lines) .
The lines should be ¼” away from the center diagonal (black dashed lines).
Pin the right sides together with the other fabric square.
Sew on top of the right-hand line until you reach the center.  Then pivot and sew until you reach the left-hand line.
Then sew on top of the left-hand line, as shown.
Rotate and repeat as shown.
Cut across the diagonals and press seams to one side.
Cut the third square in half across the diagonal
Pin the right sides together and sew along the long edge.
Press and trim your identical split squares.

Happy quilting,
