A huge hello and welcome from all at Poppy Patchwork!

This week I am making the 9-inch “January Thaw” quilt block for my Cloud Nine Quilt.

In the UK we often get our snow in January or February so it may or may not be appropriate for the weather.ย  In fact, where I live in Bristol we saw a very light flurry of snow, but if you blinked you may have missed it ๐Ÿ˜Š.

In other news, I have been very busy this week “decluttering” the sewing room.ย  We have decided it’s time to sell our house and so I needed to โ€œstageโ€ it a bit better.ย  I have had to turn my lovely [but rather busy!] sewing room into a bedroom again. This means I could only keep the bare minimum of my sewing things and my Bernina sewing machine of course. Everything else has had to go into storage. Sadly, I must have removed 80% of my things in the process.ย  However, this has made me wonder if I really do need everything I hang on to.ย  I think I am going to set myself a challenge in the new house of only keeping what I really need! Wish me luck!

The January Thaw Quilt Block

Welcome to Week 3 of the “Cloud Nine Quilt” blog. The block this week is called January Thaw.

This block is made up of a “Corner Square” in the center, “Flipped Squares” in the corners, and “Quarter Square Triangles (QST)” using 3 fabrics.

For this block, I use one of my favorite rulers – the 6.5โ€ Triangle Square Up ruler by Eleanor Burns for Quilt in a Day. This ruler makes trimming half-square triangles (HSTs) really easy, and it takes the maths out of trimming QSTs – and you canโ€™t say fairer than that! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

As usual, this is a 9-patch block, and the measurements and instructions for making this block are available in my YouTube video, released today, 21 January 2024.

The January Thaw block will be positioned in the finished quilt as shown.
Please come back next week to see the next block and video.

Happy quilting,
